RV Floorplans Explained: What All the Letters Mean (BH, RL, RD!)

When you’re shopping for an RV, you’ll notice that every model comes with a set of letters at the end of its name—BH, RL, RD, RB, and so on. To a first-time buyer, it can feel like alphabet soup, but those letters actually tell you exactly what kind of layout you’re getting.

At Beckley’s RVs, we walk customers through these floorplan codes every day, so consider this your cheat sheet!

Why Floorplan Codes Matter

These abbreviations help you quickly understand:

  • Where the main living areas are
  • What special features the layout includes
  • Who the RV is designed for (families, couples, full-timers, weekenders)
  • Whether the design fits your lifestyle

Once you know the basics, finding the right RV becomes a whole lot easier.

If you’re brand new to RV shopping, Go RVing also has a helpful breakdown of RV types and layouts.

🔤 Common RV Floorplan Abbreviations (and What They Actually Mean)

BH — Bunkhouse

Perfect for families or anyone who needs extra sleeping space.
Usually includes:

  • A bunk room with double or single bunks
  • Storage for kids’ gear
  • Sometimes a separate door or slide

Great for: Families, multigenerational camping, hosting friends.

RL — Rear Living

A cozy, lounge-style layout with the living room at the back of the RV.
Expect to see:

  • Large windows
  • Sofa and recliner seating
  • Entertainment center with a fireplace (in many models)

Great for: Couples, full-time RVers, or anyone who loves a bright, open living space.

RD — Rear Dinette

Puts the dinette at the back of the RV—usually with big wraparound windows.
This layout creates:

  • A roomy dining area
  • A great spot for game nights, meals, or working on the road
  • Extra sleeping space when the dinette converts

Great for: Travelers who value a big dining area or need an extra bed occasionally.

RB — Rear Bath

This one is exactly what it sounds like!
A rear bathroom gives you:

  • A larger shower
  • Extra storage space
  • More privacy away from the central living area

Great for: Anyone who prefers a spacious bathroom setup.

FK — Front Kitchen

A kitchen positioned at the very front of the RV.
Why people love it:

  • Tons of counter space
  • Residential-style layouts
  • Large windows over the sink

Great for: RV chefs, long-term travelers, and anyone who likes a roomy kitchen.

FL — Front Living

A “living room up front” concept that feels like a mini apartment.
These usually have:

  • Theater seating
  • Big front windows
  • Often a raised living area with tons of storage underneath

Great for: Full-timers, couples, and people who prioritize comfort.

MB — Murphy Bed

A “now you see it, now you don’t” sleeping area!
A murphy bed folds down over a sofa or dinette, allowing more open space during the day.

Great for: Small RVs, travel trailers, and buyers who want flexibility.

QB — Queen Bed / QK — King Bed

Some brands label bed size with letters:

  • QB: Queen bed
  • KB/K: King bed or King-size layout
  • QK: Varies by brand but often indicates queen-to-king conversion

Great for: Anyone who wants to double-check mattress size before buying.

LOFT

Typically seen in toy haulers or large fifth wheels.
A loft includes:

  • Elevated sleeping/storage space
  • Great for kids or extra storage

Great for: Families and full-timers who need flexible space.

🛻 Why the Letters Aren’t Always the Same

Each manufacturer uses floorplan codes slightly differently. For example:

  • One brand may use BH for double bunks
  • Another may use DBH for “Double Bunkhouse”
  • Some will add extra letters to show slide locations or features

When in doubt, always check the actual layout diagram—and at Beckley’s, we’re always happy to walk you through it.
