Safety Tips For Driving an RV at Night

Towing an RV or driving a motorhome is challenging enough, but doing so at night is even worse. Unfortunately, you don’t always have a choice when you move your camper. The tips in this guide from RV Land can help you stay as safe as possible when driving your RV at night.

Interior Lighting

It’s important to eliminate unnecessary distractions if you’re operating a tow vehicle or motorhome at night. Dim or turn off interior lights and shut off any other light sources such as phones and tablets. Remember that distracted driving is dangerous, even if you’re otherwise well rested.

Watch The Road For Animals

Many animals are nocturnal, meaning they are far more active during the night rather than the day. This means that your chances of hitting a raccoon or deer are much higher at night, so you’ll need to pay extra attention. This is especially in rural or forested areas. Luckily, roads that see frequent animal crossings are usually marked as such. If you do see an animal in the road ahead of you while operating your RV at night, press on the brakes. Swerving may lead to you losing control of the vehicle, making things that much worse.

Add More Exterior Lighting

If you’re worried about driving your RV at night, one thing you can do is add some lights to your RV. Upgraded headlights can make it easier to see in the dark. You can also add additional exterior lighting to make it easier for other drivers to see you. Just make sure that your lights aren’t so bright that they blind other drivers!
