Although it won’t officially be winter for a few more weeks, the temperatures and snowfall around the country are making travelers feel like it’s already here. Whether you’re a snowbird heading south for the season, or you’re visiting family and friends for the holidays, it’s important to drive safely in the snow and winter weather conditions. At Beckley’s Camping Center, we know your family and your RV are some of the most important parts of your life, so we’ve decided to provide a few tips for driving in snow that will help keep you and your vehicle safe.

Familiarize Yourself With Rear-Wheel Drive

Most motorhomes are rear-wheel drive, which means you may need to alter some of your driving habits. If you start sliding, pump the brakes slightly to regain control of your vehicle. Most importantly, slow down and leave at least three times the amount of space you normally would between you and the vehicle ahead.

Be Prepared to Pull Over

Although you may be in a hurry to get to your destination, you should always be prepared to spend a couple of nights off the road. Because motorhomes and travel trailers are more difficult to handle in winter conditions, you need to be willing to pull over and wait for the storm to pass. Although you may waste precious days on the road, you’ll be happy that everyone is safe and the vehicle is still in perfect condition when you arrive.

Pulling a Trailer

Travel trailers can present an entirely different set of problems when driving in snow and ice. If you lose control, stay calm and avoid making sharp turns. If you jerk the wheel in any direction while pulling a trailer, you could start sliding faster in the wrong direction. Ideally, you should stay off the road if any snow or ice are present.
